It helps to get to know your crayon characteristics before diving in, as each has its own charm.
There are many crayon brands out there, but a box of 24 Crayola crayons is a great option to get you started. They are inexpensive and well pigmented. Before you start your drawing, you may find it helpful to make a colour swatch. You can use these swatches for your colour reference as you draw. It lets you see how the colours look when applied to the paper, as the colours often differ from what shows on the paper and what they look like in stick form.
I recommend creating this colour swatch on a separate piece of paper or a page in your sketchbook using different techniques. Begin by applying a colour lightly, and then gradually build up to a heavy application—and don’t forget to write the colour names underneath. As you apply the wax, you will quickly notice a difference: some colours are beautifully opaque, while others remain more transparent, barely showing their pigment on the paper. Remember, these transparent colours are just as important as the opaque ones; they are key for smooth blending and creating subtle layers!

Choosing the suitable type of paper for your crayon drawings is just as important as the crayons themselves. Ideally, you will want paper with what artists call "tooth." This slight texture or roughness prevents the surface from feeling too smooth or slick. This texture is absolutely essential, as it helps the paper grip the wax evenly, allowing you to layer colours effectively without slippage. For a perfect balance of strength and texture, I recommend starting with paper designed specifically for pastels.
Another handy tool you should always keep nearby is a handheld sharpener. Crayons become blunt quickly, and keeping them sharp is essential for achieving those finer details. Just be sure to avoid electric sharpeners! The soft wax is prone to breaking, which will quickly clog up your machine.
Next week, I will discuss different techniques for creating crayon drawings. In the meantime, feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions or thoughts.
